Female And Male Infertility problems
Some people suffer from fertility problems, also called Infertility meaning trouble in conceiving (getting pregnant) regardless of having regular sex without using any contraception. There is no definite cap that says when a couple is 'infertile'. Most couples take quite a few months to conceive. About 17 in 20 couples conceive within a year of trying and about 19 in 20 couples conceive within two years which goes to say that 1 in 7 couples do not conceive within a year of trying.
Ovulation Problems
Failure to ovulate is the cause in about 3 in 10 cases. It is a permanent problem in some women while it is an irregular problem in some women where ovulation occurs during some months and it doesn't sometimes.
Fertility Problems in Women:
- Premature menopause
- Polycystic ovary syndrome - This can also cause excess hair growth, acne, menstrual irregularities and coupled with obesity.
- Hormonal problems like, too much prolactin, or too little of thyroxin could cause fertility problems.
- Being underweight or overweight can have an effect on your hormonal balance that can in turn affect ovulation.
- Too much exercise such like regular lengthy running can affect your hormone balance.
- Although side-effects from some medicines is a rare cause, medicines that at times cause this are anti-inflammatory painkillers.
- Insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides may be a reason in some cases.
- Different problems with the ovary for instance ovarian cysts and certain genetic problems.
- Endometriosis is seen in 1 in 20 cases of fertility problems. Tissue that lines the uterus (endometrium) is sometimes seen outside of the uterus. It is 'trapped' in the pelvic region and might affect the ovaries, uterus, and the nearby structures, often leading to lower abdominal pain and/or painful periods.
- An infection of the uterus and fallopian tube (pelvic inflammatory disease) is another regular cause. This can result in scarring which can affect fertility. Such as, scar tissue may possibly block the egg (ovum) from traveling down the fallopian tubes.
- Large fibroids or cysts can cause problems fertility problems.
Fertility Problems in Men
About 2 in 10 cases suffer from fertility problems. Some men bear testes that do not create any sperm, or very few sperm. Some are sometimes born without a vas deferens while some men have a low sperm count than the normal.
This could be due to a variety of reasons:
- Some hormonal problems.
- Existing or past infection of the testes.
- Tumors of the testes.
- Side-effects from some medicines and drugs like: sulphasalazine, nitrofurantoin, tetracyclines, cimetidine, and colchicine and due to some chemotherapy drugs like cannabis, cocaine and anabolic steroids.
- Habitual excess heat (regular saunas, hot baths, etc) is possible cause.
- Environmental factors like exposure to chemicals, x-rays, or heavy metals.
