AILMENTS DURING PREGNANCY

Most women experience minor ailments or side effects during their pregnancies usually throughout each trimester. There is no cause for worry as it is only natural but definitely

helps to know more about it and makes one better equipped to deal with it.

Backache

Backache is probably the most common ailment during pregnancy. Pain is generally felt in the lower back, in the buttocks and down the legs. Standing for longer periods, lift heavy objects or awkward positions while sleeping can cause backache .

Massage is a great relief for backache, a hot water bath, good amount of rest and painkillers if the pain is intolerable can be used. Keeping your weight under check and light exercises suggested by your gynecologist helps . Go in for low-heeled footwear and try and avoid slouching and completely stop pencil and high heeled shoes. If it is still severe, discuss with your doctor and possibly see a physiotherapist.

Water retention

Water retention occurs due to excessive amounts of fluid in the tissues that cause swelling, mainly of the feet. There are quite a number of probable causes of water retention during pregnancy, like standing for long periods, which in turn causes fluid to accumulate in the ankles, high blood pressure, which could force fluid from the blood into the tissues, causing oedema and pregnancy hormones causing salt retention in the kidneys.

Try not standing for long periods and avoid salty foods and rest your feet as often as possible. When you go for your regular examinations you will be checked for water retention as a too, if there is a serious problem, you probably will be prescribed diuretics.

Piles

Piles are varicose veins that arise in the rectum. As your baby is growing, the pressure it exerts on the rectum delays the blood flow to the heart. This causes the blood to collect and the veins to widen to contain the extra blood. By including diet rich in fiber, your stools will remain soft, which helps you through a less strenuous process of excretion.

Mood swings

Hormonal imbalance during pregnancy can sometimes have an effect on your nervous system, making you almost feel like the way you do during pre-menstrual period. Tender breasts

Tender breasts are most often one among the first signs of pregnancy. The general feeling is normally a mix of heaviness and uneasiness. This feeling lasts almost throughout pregnancy, and intensifies as you near your term. The hormones that prepare your breasts for lactation is the reason for this tenderness .

To help give you a relief from sore breasts, make sure you wear a fine support bra from the beginning of your pregnancy.

Insomnia

Trouble while sleeping can occur any time from conception during pregnancy. This is simply due to the fact that you need to urinate more frequently and as a result, wake up more during the nights. Falling short of sleep could leave you feeling very tired and edgy, so it is essential that you get that much needed rest during the day, mostly in the last few months. Try having an invigorating warm bath and a glass of warm milk before going to bed. Get the most comfy position for sleeping.
