BABY’S PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT
There could be nothing more beautiful and fascinating than seeing your little baby grow. Babies’ growth is rapid through their first year of birth. They roll their eyes, move their head and body towards objects that are familiar and catch their attention. Growth is noticed in weight, length and the head circumference. The growth of both large motor skills that involve the neck, arms, legs, hands, and feet and fine motor skills that involve the fingers can be noticed.
Growth from 1 to 3 months
- They hold their hands in a fist.
- Sucking, grasping is noticed.
- Raise their heads a little while lying and hold ten head up when supported.
- Touch their own legs and hands and tug and pull with interest and chuckle.
- Can not really control their body movements, most of the movements are their reflexes.
3 to 6 months
Babies are more active than the previous months and quicker to react to their surroundings. They:
- Try to reach out and touch objects they see.
- Roll over on their beds, this is when we need to be watchful and see that they don’t have a bad fall.
- Grow about 3 inches to 4.5 inches in height, growth is slightly lesser during these months.
- Try to put things in their mouth.
- They babble and gurgle , try to locate sounds.
- Various reactions like anger , pain ,fright and smile can be noticed.
- Smile and laugh loudly and chuckle.
- Gain an average weight of about 2 kg to 3.
- Learn to recognize faces and bond with their parents.
- React to various sounds and moving objects, like toys and other colorful objects.
- Develop some control of their muscles and nervous system.
- Vision is fully developed.
6 to 12 months
They get mobile and need to be monitored at all times during this stage as they get quite unpredictable and tough to control.
- They crawl to corners of the house and towards objects and pull them.
- They begin to develop regular eating and sleep patterns.
- They can manage to balance and sit alone.
- Drink with bottles more often.
- Can eat food made at home.
- Can hold and drop things, make the place quite messy.
- Can stand with the support of furniture and can only walk holding onto something.
- They by now weigh more than three times of what they weighed before and also an increase in their height can be noticed.
- They can utter small words like ‘mama’, ‘bye’ and can respond to what we say.
- Large and superior motor skills increase rapidly.
Over the next year, the baby’s fine motor skills develop further. He is able to use his hands and fingers with increasing precision and is able to carry out variety of tasks that involve accuracy. By the time he is two years of age; he can hold and control a pencil or a brush with comparative ease, place objects in their appropriate places," play puzzles etc., he has now polished his fine motor abilities and would love to receive any appreciation from his parents.
